Travel Smart and Secure: Your GL.iNET Hotspot with WireGuard VPN

Traveling can be exciting, but staying secure online can be a challenge, especially when relying on public Wi-Fi. This guide will show you how to leverage your GL.iNet hotspot Wi-Fi router with a WireGuard VPN, allowing you to create a secure, private connection wherever you go. We are not affiliated with GL.iNet folks, just find their devices useful!

WireGuard is a modern, fast, and secure VPN protocol that's gaining popularity for its efficiency. By connecting your GL.iNet router to a WireGuard server running at your home (on a WEPN pod), you can route all your travel internet traffic through your home network, making it appear as if you're browsing from home. This is incredibly useful for accessing geo-restricted content you are legally allowed to use, protecting your data from prying eyes, and bypassing certain network restrictions.

Important Note: While WireGuard is excellent for privacy and security, it's crucial to understand that VPNs, including WireGuard, may not work in highly restrictive countries like China and Iran. These countries often employ sophisticated network filtering and blocking techniques that can detect and disrupt VPN traffic. For those regions, you should use Shadowsocks on our pods, which are not easily supported on GL.iNet devices yet. Always be aware of local regulations and potential limitations when traveling to such regions.

What You'll Need:

  • A GL.iNet hotspot Wi-Fi router (e.g., GL-AXT1800, GL-MT3000, etc.)

  • A WEPN pod.

    • As part of WEPN purchase, you have already checked your home network compatibility using our app.

  • The GL.iNet mobile app (available for iOS and Android).

Step 1: Set up your GL.iNet router

This can be easily done using the Gl.iNet mobile application.

Step 2: Create a WireGuard User on Your WEPN Pod

This step involves configuring your WEPN pod to act as a WireGuard server. You will be using the intuitive WEPN companion app.

  • After the WEPN pod is set up, from the app’s main screen tap on “Grant access” button.

  • Enter a recognizable nickname for your connection.

  • Navigate to "Tunnel for VPN" on the same screen and select "Wireguard" as your preferred VPN protocol.

  • Tap "Done" to return to the previous configuration screen.

  • Tap "Next."

  • Tap the green "Share access key" button.

  • Save the Wireguard configuration guide to an easily accessible location. This file contains essential VPN connection information.

Step 3: Use the GL.iNet App to Add the Profile File to Your Router

Now, let's get that WireGuard profile onto your GL.iNet router using their intuitive mobile app.

  1. Connect to your GL.iNet router's Wi-Fi: Ensure your smartphone is connected to the Wi-Fi network broadcast by your GL.iNet router.

  2. Open the GL.iNet app: Launch the GL.iNet app on your smartphone.

  3. Select your router: The app should detect and display your GL.iNet router. Tap on it to access its settings.

  4. Navigate to VPN settings: Look for a "VPN" or "VPN Client" section within the app.

  5. Add a new WireGuard client: You should see an option to "Add WireGuard Client" or similar.

  6. Import the .wg profile:

    • The app will likely give you options to import a configuration. Choose "Import from file" or "Upload file."

    • Browse to the .wg or .conf file you downloaded in Step 1 and select it.

  7. Name your profile: Give your new WireGuard profile a descriptive name (e.g., "Home VPN," "Travel Secure").

  8. Save and apply: Confirm the import, and the app will upload the configuration to your GL.iNet router.

Step 4: Use the GL.iNet Hotspot Device Toggle to Turn WireGuard On and Off

One of the fantastic features of GL.iNet routers is their physical toggle switch, which can be configured to control various functions, including the VPN client. This makes it incredibly convenient to enable or disable your WireGuard connection without needing to log into the web interface or app every time.

To set up the toggle switch:

  1. Open your GL.iNet mobile app (or use the web admin)

  2. Go to System -> Toggle Buttons (or similar): The exact path might vary slightly depending on your GL.iNet router's firmware version. Look for "System" or "Advanced" settings, then "Toggle Buttons" or "Button Settings."

  3. Configure the toggle function: You'll find options to assign a function to the physical toggle switch. Select "WireGuard Client" (or "VPN Client" and then choose WireGuard if prompted).

  4. Apply settings: Save your changes.

Now, when you're on the go, you can simply flick the side toggle switch on your GL.iNet hotspot device to turn your WireGuard VPN connection on or off. A green light or a change in status on the router's interface will usually indicate that the VPN is active.
